NORMAL — It started with the sound of gunshots outside a classroom. A gunman entered and began firing. Students were struck. Blood on the floor, on their clothes. Shock. Fear. Despair. Word spread. Emails and text messages alerted the campus community to danger. Hearts pounding, people barricaded themselves in dorms, classrooms, apartments, cars, closets. As the news broke, frantic messages from friends and family: "Are you OK?" For some, the answer would never come. That is how a mass shooting at Michigan State University began to unfold last week, leaving three students dead and five wounded, according to accounts from students, faculty and authorities.
